Matthew McConaughey says he won't run for Texas governor but politics is 'a humbling and inspiring path to ponder'

The actor said he won't be running for governor of Texas.

I never thought that I would one day be considered for political leadership, even though I was born in Uvalde, Texas. It's a path that's inspiring and a lot of work. I am choosing not to take that path at the moment.

He said he has learned a lot from studying Texas and national politics, including that we need to start shining a light on our shared values, the ones that cross party lines, and the ones that build bridges instead of burning them.

The American dream is one of the things that McConaughey believes prop up.

He said that politicians can help us get to where we need to go. They can't do anything for us unless we choose to do for ourselves.

The Oscar-winning actor said earlier this year that he was seriously considering a run for governor, though he has not been specific about his political stances or under what party he would've run.

Beto O'Rourke, a Democrat, announced earlier this month that he is running against Greg Abbott, a Republican.
