The New York Yankees have made no secret about their desire to sign Marcus Semien, one of the best free agents, and now he has agreed to sign with the Texas Rangers.

Jon Heyman of the MLB Network reports that Semien has a seven year deal. The Yankees did not offer a seven-year contract, but showed interest in the 31-year-old.

Semien was a second baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2021 season. He was named to the All-Star Game for the first time in his nine-year career and won his first Gold Glove as a result of the position change.

Brian Dozier had a career-high 45 home runs and Semien had a career-high 45. The first-team All-MLB selection added career-bests in batting average, runs scored, and stolen bases. He led the majors with 86 extra-base hits.

Semien finished third in the voting for the American League's Most Valuable Player. He's the only player with two top-three finishes in the past three years.

The Rangers haven't made the playoffs since 2016 and have finished last in the AL West in each of the past two seasons. His power bat will help boost a lineup that finished 26th in the majors in home runs last year with 167.
In October, Brian Cashman said that the Yankees needed to find a new shortstop. Cashman said that he believes Gleyber is best served at second base because of his disappointing performance.
There are still a number of high-quality shortstops available on the open market, even though Semien is no longer available. The Yankees will likely try to sign former All-Stars Carlos Correa,Corey Seager, and Javier Baez in free agency.
