Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United: Reds have reason to hope but Ralf Rangnick has work to do

Jadon scored his first goal in the league after 50 minutes.

The sight of a Manchester United technical director fiddling with an earpiece sent theorists into a frenzy.

Why did he need another form of communication if the interim manager and his team were close by? Who was he talking to?

The group of people gathered on the grassy knoll of the Bridge had their money on Ralf Rangnick, who is currently waiting on a work permit before taking charge until the end of the season.

The truth will be less exotic and exciting but it is certain that Rangnick would have been watching and studying the team before trying to impose his style on them.

The decision to bench the Portuguese star added to the intrigue, and how we needed it on an afternoon of freezing temperatures and attritional football that ended honours even.

In the second half, he was brought on for Jadon Sancho.

Much has been made of the fact that the style of "gegenpressing" that Rangnick uses demands high intensity, high pressing and rigorous physical demands. The great man is still a superb footballer and has demonstrated his worth in goals since returning to Old United, but his template does not sound like an ideal framework for his talent.

A lot of people are having a go at Michael Carrick for droppingRonaldo and picking thatmidfield. I think the incoming manager picked that team because it's a huge departure from what they've been doing.

The game is lively and entertaining, but at least a point for United at the top of the table, after the carnage of the defeats by Manchester City, Manchester United, andWatford, means that Carrick has something to work with. The wounds have been repaired.

No getting carried away.

United were second best throughout and a win would have fallen into "smash and grab" territory, but a win would have brought a win at Villarreal in the Champions League, so at least Rangnick arrives with a measure of spirit.

When Jadon Sancho scored the goal that gave United the lead, he was a marginal figure and was followed down the tunnel by his team-mates who stayed out to acknowledge United's fans.

The defensive minded trio of Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic were the ones that made their intentions clear. This was a very hard-earned point for United, who were thankful to keeper David de Gea in the first half, but were written off as the bad guys in the second half.

He can tell that United showed some of the nerve and heart that have been missing as Solskjaer stumbled haplessly to the sack.

Jorginho scored from the spot after Thiago Silva was brought down by Wan-Bissaka.

The first half was a time when United were careless in possession and invited the pressure of the Blues, especially Bruno Fernandes, as he continues to be out of sorts. United were the beneficiaries of their failure to make 24 attempts on goal count, but every ounce of positivity came from the other side.

The United hierarchy will hope that Rangnick has the same impact on them as Tuchel had on the club when he was in charge.

This United squad is a million miles away from winning the title, but in at least galvanising, organizing and inspiring a squad that does possess quality but has lacked guidance and direction, too often left to chance.

As United clear the decks for the German to assume control, these are two of the selling points of the much-celebrated Rangnick. This squad is better than it has shown, and United will hope that the reputation and references that have preceded him will help him deliver.

After two decent results and performances, Carrick will be handing over. There is still a lot of work to be done, regardless of what can be seen as a very creditable point at Stamford Bridge.
