Garth Crooks' team of the week: De Gea, Rudiger, Saka, Salah, Vardy

The top three clubs are separated by two points after Manchester United and Chelsea drew on Sunday.

In other matches, the top-four chase continued with a 2-0 win over the bottom side, as well as a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace, and a 4-2 win against the Hornets.

There were goalless draws between Wolves andNorwich, as well as a postponement of the match between Spurs and Seagulls due to heavy snow.

You can check out my team of the week and then make your own selections at the bottom of the article.

David de Gea is a goalkeeper.

David de Gea made two saves in the first three minutes of the game.

De Gea was the one who got United to half-time without giving up. In Spain, the same thing happened on Tuesday night in the game against Villarreal. United was given the initiative after Jorginho made a monumental mistake.

Goodness only knows why Jorginho didn't head the ball back where it came from. I hope that his team-mates give him the support he needs when he has a bad period.

Did you know? In their last eight games against Manchester United, they have not won. They had a run of 10 games without a league win against United.

Defending Defenders: Antonio Rudiger, Nuno Tavares, and Virgil van Dijk.

Antonio Rudiger made a great tackle in the first half which set the tone for the rest of the match. The fixture against Manchester United, Manchester City and Manchester United is made for the likes of Rudiger.

Sometimes, when he is looking for confrontations even when they aren't there, he will create his own. He's willing to score the odd goal if it's on his head and he's attacking the opposition's goal.

He was given a great chance in the closing minutes of the game against Manchester United and he made the most of it. The same thing happened to van Dijk against Saints. My team of the week is made up of two world-class defenders.

Did you know? In their last two games at the home of the Blues, they attempted 49 shots and had 100 touches on their opponent's penalty area, but failed to win.

There is no other central defender in the world who could have scored a goal like Van Dijk did against Saints.

It was impressive to strike the ball on the volley and direct it towards the goal from just inside the box. This was a walk in the park for someone.

Without Danny Ings up front and Jannik Vestergaard at the back, it looks mediocre. If they don't address these two positions in January, the Saints won't go marching on, but will leave the league.

Did you know? Trent Alexander-Arnold has assisted six of Van Dijk's goals.

He's definitely on my radar now that he passed me by. Full-backs are not afraid to try and have an impact on the game.

If he wasn't running into the opposition's half with the ball, he was trying to put one of his teammates through on goal. The assist for the goal was brilliant.

Eddie Howe has an awful lot to do for the club. The new manager invested some faith in Jonjo Shelvey, who had a decent game. If Howe can get Shelvey fit and focused for a long time, the transfer market will be cheaper for the club.

Did you know? The side starting the day bottom of the table has never lost a home game against the team.

Quarterbacks: James Maddison, John McGinn, and Thiago Alcantara.

From the moment the game started, Saka looked like a player who was serious.

He gave the game a scare, but the Geordies survived. It was only a matter of time before this brilliant young talent exposed the weaknesses of the other side.

A wonderful goal by Saka was matched by a display of commitment and effort. I'm looking forward to seeing how much he's grown since the European Championships, because I'm looking forward to watching this lad take his next penalty.

Did you know? In the past three games against the team, Saka has scored or assisted.

The Spaniard has never completely convinced me that he has acclimatized to the intensity of the league.

He can play, but when the game becomes physical and frenetic, he can't engage because he doesn't have enough pace. Thiago was able to control the game because of the dominance of the other team.

He's a great player on the ball. When your team is in control but you need the occasional rottweiler in the middle, this is very good.

Did you know? The Reds have scored 39 goals in 13 games in the top flight this season, their highest total at this stage of the campaign.

A goal by Maddison and a couple of other things gaveLeicester the motivation they needed to take the game beyond the reach of Hornets.

It was the best game Maddison has played in a long time. The Hornets, rejuvenated under the watch of Ranieri, had a real go.

If Ranieri could teach his defenders how to defend, then they could be a team we start taking seriously.

Did you know? Maddison scored and assisted for the first time in the premier league on Sunday, in what was his 112th appearance in the competition.

It might be two wins out of two for Steven Gerrard, but it was the performance by John McGinn that sealed the victory for Villa.

McGinn had a chance to score when he cut in from the right and shot from the edge of the box, but Vicente Guaita saved it.

Palace had been playing well recently and this was disappointing. With Michael Olise back, Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha back, it looks like Patrick Vieira might be able to create a really decent team in south-eastern London.

Did you know? McGinn has equalled his best goal tally in a season in just 12 appearances. He scored three in both years.

The forwards are: Jamie Vardy, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah.

Some of my readers will be surprised that Diogo Jota is not in my selections this week. I thought his performance was ordinary in comparison to Sadio Mane and especially Salah.

At the moment, the Egypt international is a joy to watch. When he is playing for the team and not just scoring goals, there is no better forward in the world than Salah. He was outstanding against the Saints.

I am amazed by his strength. He is very strong on the ball. There is a problem forLiverpool. They lose both of them to the African Nations Cup. I wonder what impact that will have on their title chances.

Did you know? The Egyptian has been directly involved in 25 goals this season, more than any other player in the league.

Jamie Vardy said that he was having another party.

The former England international hasn't made my team of the week for some time now but his performance against the centre-forward put me in an impossible position.

It's infectious that Vardy plays the game with such passion and enthusiasm. His link-up play with Maddison was special and it's nice to see good players playing well at the same time.

Did you know? Ian Wright had a record of 93 goals scored by 30 or older. Since his first game in January of last year, Vardy has scored more goals in the competition than any other player.

This was the best Sadio had ever been. The Saints never came to terms with the demands of the demands of Anfield and the star was everywhere.

When he is at his best, he affects the play. He was lucky to stay on the pitch after a terrible challenge by Jan Bednarek, who was fortunate to remain on the pitch.

Last week I criticized the crowd for being involved with Mikel Arteta and inflaming them over a challenge that was tame in comparison to Bednarek's tackle on Mane. Bednarek should have left because he didn't try to influence the referee's decision.

Did you know? In 17 consecutive games, the Reds have scored two or more goals. They are the second English top-flight club to achieve that.

The criminals of the matter.

The question of whether or not Solskjaer should have been given the job in the first place was raised after his departure from Manchester United.

The board has once again put their head on the chopping block with the fans who insist they appointed a manager worthy of their club and the players they demand.

They have gone for someone else. Who is Ralf? I can almost feel the disapproval and contempt for the appointment already, and that's before the new interim coach takes up his position.

The problem with teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United is that they are victims of their history more than they are their success. Only a few managers with big reputations can manage those clubs and keep control of the dressing rooms.

I understand why he wouldn't take the job. He achieved the impossible and won three titles with Real Madrid, why would he put his credentials on the line?

There is too much to do at United. I don't see why Mauricio Pochettino would leave Paris. If he can't win the European Championship with Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, he will forget about winning the United Championship.

So who? The reality is that United have been boxed in. Managers were available, but they have delayed and paid the price.

They are now faced with the unenviable task of trying to find another Sir Alex Ferguson. I don't envy them one bit.
