Fauci said GOP attacks against him are 'nonsense' and he had to 'laugh' when Sen. Ted Cruz said he should be prosecuted

The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said in an interview that the political attacks against him are nonsense.
Fauci said during an appearance on CBS News' "Face the Nation" that the theater that goes on with the investigations and the congressional committees is noise.

Kentucky Sen. Paul called for Fauci to be fired after he lied to Congress about US-funded research. Fauci has denied the claims.

That's noise. I know what my job is.

Fauci, the chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, became a divisive figure during the Trump administration when the former president disagreed with his recommendations. Fauci has been the target of far-right and conservative figures during the Biden administration.

Fauci was asked about comments made by Ted Cruz, a Republican, who called on the US Attorney General to prosecute Fauci over claims he lied about gain of function experiments.

I have to laugh at that. I should be held accountable. What happened on January 6? Fauci replied, laughing, and referring to the January 6 riot at the US Capitol that was incited by former President Donald Trump and led to his impeachment earlier this year.

Fauci said he was attacked as a means to attack science.

He said that he wanted to save people's lives. There's a distinct anti-science flavor to this and anyone who's looking at it carefully knows that.

Nobody will know what they're talking about if they criticize science. If they aim their bullets at Tony Fauci, people could recognize him.
