Malta Air Boeing 737 Suffers Severe Birdstrikes

On the final approach to Bologna Airport, Italy, a Malta Air Boeing-737-800 was hit by birds.

The five year old aircraft, registration 9H-QDG, was on final approach to runway 12 when it flew through a flock of herons, which impacted the nose, windshield and both wings. A number of herons were killed by the right hand engine, which subsequently had a compressor stall and sputtering flames. The incident is shown in the below video.

The aircraft continued on to the runway. The left-hand engine had eaten a number of birds and the pitot tube had been damaged.

After the incident, the aircraft was grounded for four days and the right engine was removed from the wing. The aircraft flew to Fes Saiss airport in Morocco after repairs.
