Boston Celtics' Enes Kanter to change last name to Freedom

The Boston Celtics center is changing his name.

The Turkish-born Kanter will become a United States citizen on Monday. After completing the citizenship process, his agent told the Associated Press that he will change his name.

Kanter has a long history of activism. He was indicted in his home country of Turkey on charges of belonging to an armed terrorist group, which he denies. Turkey is seeking his return.

Celtics games have been pulled from Chinese media this season because of player support for Tibet.

After being drafted by Utah with the third overall pick in the 2011 draft, Kanter went to Oklahoma City, New York Knicks, and Portland Trail blazers before rejoining the Celtics.

In 11 seasons, he has averaged over 11 points per game.
