Open Channel: Should Video Games Remain Animated, or Go Live Action?



The last few years have seen a number of films and shows based on video games. Mass Effect and Halo are two of the sci-fi franchises that are in the works for future series, as well as ones based on other properties like Assassin's Creed. The bigger question is how these games should be presented in the future.

Thanks to the work done by their respective studios, the animated versions of games like Castlevania, DOTA, and The Witcher have been noted as enjoyable. Riot and the team at Fortiche are putting their previous experience with animated videos for League of Legends to great use to deliver what is one of the most pleasant surprises of the year. The animation team being given free reign to do what they do best with the greatest resources available to them is what makes the moments like Ekko versus Jinx so special.

Live action is not the same thing. You can get classics like the original Mortal Kombat, Detective Pikachu, and Sonic the Hedgehog. The versions of games starring real human actors can't seem to figure out what the heck they are, as we've seen with the Prince of Persia and Need for Speed remakes. A lot of video games have tried and failed to make the jump to live action. Remember how we were supposed to get films for Bioshock, Gears of War, and Infamous? Good times. The stigma against animation in the west means that live action versions debatably carry a greater sense of legitimacy and prestige. The problem for some of the games getting adapted is that you can argue that they will just end up being repeats of moments players became emotionally attached to years ago.
