Sophia A. Nelson writes that Rep. Lauren Boebert is one of the most repugnant members to ever serve in Congress.
America is in a dark place. I think we all know it's true. Congress used to be a safe place from the politics of personal animus and destruction. Our democracy is built on respect, decorum and compromise in federal legislative body politics. Those days are over.
We have entered a new era of open hostility, hatred, unveiled racism, videos depicting congressional members beheading other members of Congress, recriminations and even religious bigotry. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, was the latest example on display.
The Right's apparent second coming of Annie Oakley is one of the funniest, most repugnant, unserious, ridiculous members of Congress ever to serve in the lower chamber.

Two weeks ago, the House voted to censure Gosar for his vile use of a meme depicting him killing Ocascio-Cortez.
Boebert attacked The Squad during a House floor speech as she shrieked, "The Jihad Squad member from Minnesota has paid her husband and not her brother husband." A member of the Foreign Affairs Committee is praising terrorists. The presiding officer gavel her down with little success.
Rep. Boebert spoke to a conservative audience during the Thanksgiving holiday week. The freshman congresswoman recalled an encounter with a Capitol Police officer when she was in the elevator. Lauren Boebert said that she didn't have a backpack. We should be fine. Boebert referred to the Muslim and her Democratic colleagues as the Jihad squad.
Pete Buttigieg was once again attacked by Lauren Boebert, who said he was still at home trying to figure out how to chest feed.

Lauren Boebert made a bigoted comment at the same event where she attacked Ilhan Omar with anti-Muslim rhetoric.
November 26, 2021.
Boebert claimed it was a joke. House Democrats and millions of Americans didn't see the humor in the vile and heinous attack on a sitting member of Congress who is also a Muslim.
Boebert has apologized for her comments, but they must not be allowed to stand.
There is bad decorum in the House of Representatives. The lack of dignified leadership is appalling. Kyle Rittenhouse was hailed as an American hero for shooting two people to death and wounding another in what he calls "self defense", but he also tried to take guns to the floor, and openly traded in racism and anti-semitism. It is not right for members of the United States Congress to act this way.
The way that all of these members have been allowed to demean, menace, and threaten is more odious to me as a Black woman. The attacks are racist. We no longer have to fear attacks from White men in power. White women of power are doing their bidding. White women are able to take cover. White men can't say things in the 21st century that they can in the past. It is becoming commonplace in the halls of Congress.

The issue of intersectionality of race and gender keeps rearing its ugly head for Black women everywhere.
I experienced this as a professor and scholar in residence at Christopher Newport University, when a small group of White female faculty and students took exception to my question about a bisexual DC Comics character, with the blessing of the White administration officials. I was called a Homophobe and subjected to threats and petitions for my removal because I was not asking me offline. I don't think a White scholar or professor would be treated that way.
I am not alone. I talk to Black female colleagues in corporate and academia industries who experience these micro-aggressions daily. Black women can't allow others to treat us in this way when we hold high positions of honor and respect. If we don't stand up to this new form of oppression by our White female colleagues and counterparts, we will be in for another generation of professional regression and disrespect.
Whether we are talking about the treatment of Janet Jackson, the recent broadside media hit against Vice President Kamala Harris, or the racist and xenophobic attacks on Rep.
Boebert will be censured. Will Kevin McCarthy speak out against her? There will be more attacks on Black women in public life.
Our credentials, voice, humanity, and faith are all disrespected. We don't have to agree on everything, but we should respect people's faith and their right to express their opinions, without being attacked with unkind labels.
