Sir Frank Williams: Formula 1 team founder dies aged 79

Williams and his daughter were well respected in the industry.

Sir Frank Williams was the team principal of the Williams Racing Formula 1 team.

He built a team that was one of the most successful in the sport.

The team won many titles during his time with Williams, including nine titles in the constructors' championship.

After selling Williams to US investors, he and his daughter moved away from the sport.

The Williams team said in a statement that it was with great sadness that they could confirm the death of Sir Frank Williams, founder and former team principal of Williams Racing.

Sir Frank died peacefully this morning surrounded by his family.

Today we pay tribute to our beloved figurehead. Frank will be missed. All friends and colleagues are asked to respect the Williams family's wishes.

A car crash in France in 1986 left Williams with a spine injury.

F1 president and chief executive Stefano Domenicali paid tribute to Williams.

He overcame the most difficult challenges in his life to win on and off the track. A member of the F1 family has died and will be missed.

He will be remembered on our sport forever. My thoughts are with the Williams family.

More to come.
