A 7-year old Black girl was shot and killed in Chicago in April while sitting in a car with her father.
A Latino boy was shot and killed by a Chicago police officer in the middle of the night. He was shot by the police when he threw the gun he was carrying.
The murder in Chicago is not breaking news. The city has had almost 700 homicides this year. A new element was added to the sad story. The CEO of a major American corporation weighed in. He didn't blame the usual suspects, such as systemic racism and rogue cops, for the deaths.
Chris Kempczinski, the president and CEO of McDonald's, sent a text message to the mayor of Chicago, saying that the shootings were tragic. The parents failed those kids.
No parent wants to be accused of failing a child, but let's take a look at whether Kempczinski was unnecessarily sensitive or if there was a reason to conclude that both parents failed those kids.
The father of the dead girl has a long criminal record and acknowledged on social media that he was a target for gang retaliation. He allowed his daughter to sit in the car with him.
The 13-year-old boy who was shot and killed by a police officer, what was he doing with a gun? He was running around with a 21-year-old repeat gun offenders at 2:30 in the morning. Someone called the police when the two were caught on video shooting at cars. The boy had something on his hand.
Based on the information we know, it appears that the McDonald's CEO did nothing more than tell an inconvenient truth.
A backlash occurred when his message to the mayor was revealed. The text was called "ignorant, racist and unacceptable" by activist groups.
The groups wrote that you relied on stereotypes to uphold the status quo and avoid accountability for those in power. As the leader of one of the world's largest private employers and most famous brands, you have a responsibility to do better.
Kempczinski might have been aware of the backlash. For whatever reason, he didn't. Did he stand by his words? Did he mention that the dead children's parents had a responsibility to do better? Absolutely not. He apologized over and over again.
He wrote a letter to McDonald's employees, saying that he had not walked in the shoes of those children's families. Not thinking about this from their viewpoint was wrong.
He told his employees in a video that he let them down.
He apologized to more than 100 community leaders from Chicago and across Illinois. "Mr. Kempczinski made an observation that was shared by an overwhelming majority of rational adults," said Riley in the Wall Street Journal.
We now live in post-George Floyd America, where simply stating a plain truth has become riskier. If you utter a reasonable opinion that is deemed "unacceptable" by the woke mob, you can get smeared as a racist. If you're talking about members of racial and ethnic minorities, it can get canceled.
We've heard people say that we need to have an honest conversation about race. I used to think that was a good idea. Not anymore.
Too many CEOs of major American corporations have given in to the activists and have become afraid to tell the truth. The mob will come after us.
When we become a nation of people who are afraid to speak the truth, what happens? It's easy to say nothing and speak honestly about what we believe.
We Americans used to believe the final words of our national anthem, that we live in the land of the free and the home of the brave. We're still a great nation in many ways, but those words don't seem as obvious anymore. The way they used to be is not the same.
The American people will eventually say, "We've had enough of this woke nonsense."
It can't come soon enough for many Americans.
