Australia's federal health minister said he was meeting the prime minister, Scott Morrison, and the chief health officer, and state and territory counterparts to discuss developments around the Omicron Covid-19 variant.

The secretary of state spoke with the minister of international relations and cooperation in South Africa about cooperation on vaccinations in Africa.
The State Department said that Secretary Blinken praised South Africa's scientists for the quick identification of the Omicron variant and that it should serve as a model for the world.
Under Donald Trump and now Joe Biden, the US has criticized China for not being forthcoming on the origins of the coronaviruses.
