GitHub is down, affecting thousands of developers

Thousands or millions of developers are affected by the downing of Microsoft-owned GitHub. The issues began at around 3:45PM and affected everything from Git operations to packages to pages.

An incident update on the GitHub status page says that they are investigating errors. We will provide an update as soon as possible. There are problems with Git operations on the status page. Codespaces seems to be working.

More than 73 million developers use the service for version control via Git and hosting for software development on the platform. Developers and companies are increasingly using the large code repository, GitHub, to host their entire projects and code. Apple, Amazon, and many other tech companies use the platform.

There are more than 100 million repositories hosted on the platform. Errors hit the service and it went down for two hours. The company continues to operate as an independent Microsoft-owned business after former CEO Nat Friedman stepped down.
