John Wall has not played for the Houston Rockets this year as they look for a home to trade the five-time All-Star.
Wall has spoken with the team about returning to the active roster.
On Saturday, Adrian Wojnarowski broke that news on his account.
John Wall wants to play for the team in the near future, according to sources. Soon, a story.
The five-time All-Star guard talked to Houston general manager Rafael Stone on Friday about restarting a dialogue on a return to the active roster, sources said. The sides plan to talk on Sunday.
Wall has averaged 19.1 points, 9.1 assists and 4.3 rebound per game for his NBA career, which began in 2010 with the Washington Wizards.
Wall was part of a deal that sent Russell Westbrook to the Wizards. The former Kentucky star averaged 20.6 points and 6.9 assists in 40 games for the Houston.
Houston is in the middle of a rebuild after the end of James Harden's time with the team.
The team added four first-round picks in July, including the No. 2 overall pick.
The team started 2-16, with some serious growing pains. It's not in a position to compete for a playoff spot, and it's not likely to earn the NBA's worst record.
Wall is likely better suited on a team with a playoff or championship goal.
He has a $47.3 million player option he can use in 2022-23, which could be a serious obstacle to a potential trade. This year, the free agent will be due $44.3 million.
It's possible that the Rockets won't find a suitor any time soon because a trade hasn't happened yet. There is a fine line between playing and not playing, but Wall may as well play.
More information was added by Wojnarowski.
There is likely a compromise that needs to be found between respecting Wall's stature as an All-Star on a super-max contract and the desire to have him play a role in helping develop their young core.
The Houston Rockets will play the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday, looking to build on their 118-113 win over the Chicago Bulls.
