Emerging Omicron Coronavirus Variant Has Officials Worldwide on the Defensive

As the holiday season begins, authorities worldwide are taking steps to contain the spread of the new coronaviruses variant Omicron. The World Health Organization recognized a variant of the coronaviruses as a "variant of concern" due to preliminary evidence that it may be more contagious and resistant to inoculation than previous strains.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Friday due to concerns about the Omicron variant and the rising coronaviruses infections in the state. She said that the executive order greenlights the New York health department to limit non-essential, non-urgent procedures at hospitals, expand hospital capacity, and acquire pandemic-fighting supplies, which should help avert staffing and equipment.

Hochul said that the new Omicron variant is coming, and that they continue to see warning signs of spikes.

On December 3, the order goes into effect and will be reviewed on January 15. The travel ban from eight southern African countries will take effect on Monday.

The Omicron variant has not been found in the United States so far, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is working with South African authorities to track its spread. The agency expects Omicron to be identified quickly if the variant does emerge in the U.S.

There were cases of the new Omicron variant detected in the UK, Germany, and Italy on Saturday, prompting travel bans across Europe. The variant was found in several countries.

The Prime Minister of the U.K. said that there are two cases in the UK. Sajid Javid told the news agency that the cases were connected to travel to Southern Africa.

To slow the spread, Johnson has announced more stringent mask mandates and self-isolation requirements for incoming travelers. In the U.K., face masks must be worn in retail settings and on public transport, and arrivals from all countries will be required to self-isolate until they test negative for the virus.

He said in a press statement that we need to buy time for our scientists to understand what we are dealing with.

If you haven't already received the vaccine, Johnson, Hochul, Biden, and other authorities are urging you to. All adults who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine at least six months ago are eligible for the covid-19 booster shot. Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna expect to have data on the effectiveness of their vaccines against the Omicron variant in the next few weeks. Pfizer and BioNTech told the outlet that they could make a vaccine tailored to the Omicron variant and have it shipped out in 100 days. Moderna is working on a booster for the new variant.
