According to sources, John Wall wants to play for the team in the near future.

The five-time All-Star guard talked to Houston's general manager on Friday about restarting discussions on a return to the active roster, sources said. The two sides are expected to talk on Sunday.

It will be difficult for Wall to play this season if the Rockets want him to play a role in their young core, while respecting his stature with a supermax contract. It is possible that this could be the key to finding a path for Wall to play for the Rockets.

With two years and $91 million left on his contract, trade talks surrounding Wall have been a nonstarter this season and there is no inclination on either side for a buyout to make him a free agent, sources said.

Wall arrived in Houston via a trade with Washington that sent Russell Westbrook to the Wizards prior to the 2020-2021 season. After missing the entire season with an injury, Wall started 40 games and averaged 20.6 points and 6.9 assists. Wall was shut down late in the season by the Astros and Wall in order to protect his body and trade value.

The team is counting on Green and Porter to be cornerstones for the future. The team and Wall agreed before the season that he wouldn't be an active player as the team sought trade scenarios, but he would continue practicing and working out with the team. Wall wants to play again and he's starting conversations with the organization on whether they can be a circumstance for a return that is agreeable to Wall and the team.

The Houston Rockets ended a 15-game losing streak with a victory over the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.
