Fauci said in an interview that the U.S. has not yet detected the omicron variant, but that it is likely to go all over.
Fauci said that omicron is more transmissible than the original form of the virus, but more research needs to be done on the variant.
President Joe Biden announced restrictions on air travel from countries in southern Africa, including South Africa, where the variant was first identified. Travel from the region has been restricted by other countries around the globe. The World Health Organization said omicron was a variant of concern because of the large number of mutations. The organization said that early evidence showed that the new variant could increase the risk of Covid-19 reinfection.
