Russian Game Changer? Meet the New Irkut MC-21

The Irkut MC-21 made its international debut at the airshow. It was available for tours on the ground and participated in the flying display on most days.

The Irkut MC-21 is a single-aisle airliner that was developed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau and is a branch of the United Aircraft Corporation in Russia.

I went to the MC-21 cabin. The testing station has the airframe, cabin, cockpit and testing station.

There are two testing stations in the front cabin.

An engineer was interviewed. She said that the MC-21 has an aspect ratio that reduces drag.

The Russian engine is on display. Russia decided to have both an internal and external supplier for the engine and nacelle, for greater flexibility in controlling rate and price. The other option is with the Whitney.

There are some seats in the rear of the car. The engineer told me that the MC-21 has the widest cabin width. The MC-21 is expected to enter service in the year 2022.

In a two class configuration it has 163 passengers and in a single class configuration it has 211 passengers.

The modern MC-21 cabin is very similar to a plane. Can the new MC-21 be a serious threat to the market? It has a long way to go. The key is to get FAA and EASA certification.
