Storm Arwen: Sporting fixtures across UK affected by gale force winds

Sport began to feel the force of Storm Arwen and the game with Stevenage and the jump racing meet at Bangor have been called off.

The high winds were to blame for the postponement of the Sky Bet League Two game at Prenton Park.

A small section of the main stand roof has been blown off and a lot of roof signs have been destroyed.

The game is not safe to go ahead until the roof is inspected. Everyone's primary concern is the safety of fans, even though this is a big disappointment.

We apologize for the hassle.

Bangor's seven races have also been canceled, with the course having suffered damage overnight.

The clerk of the course said that the power was out since around 2am and that it would not be back until around 4pm.

The damage to some of the public areas has made them unsafe.

It's not long-term damage, it's just with the timescale we had this morning and the wind being as strong as it was, it was an easy decision to make.

Despite the damage caused across Britain, Saturday's high-profile fixtures at Newbury and Newcastle are set to go ahead.

If the Saturday evening card is to go ahead, it must pass a second precautionary check at 8am, while the Sunday meetings at Carlisle and Leicester are subject to a precautionary inspection at 8am due to the threat of frost.
