UK Championship: Snooker boss says Shaun Murphy row 'great' for the sport

The World Snooker Tour had a new chairman in May.

The York Barbican will be open from 23 November to 5 December.

The UK Championship can be watched on the radio.

The manner in which Neil Robertson and Shaun Murphy were knocked out of the first round of the UK Championship has been great for snooker.

Robertson lost to John Astley in a professional match while Murphy lost to Si Jiahui in a professional match.

The financial health of the game, the importance of women on the tour and attracting new audiences, and the row following Murphy's defeat, were all covered in an interview with the radio station.

"It has caused a huge furore with remarkable interest from snooker fans and others," he said.

I called Murphy the other day and he was surprised as well. Bad publicity is not a thing. overnight ticket sales doubled In an ideal world, these things would be discussed behind closed doors, but they are not.

If they win, they can't have any prize money, like in golf. The prize money these guys earn and the amount of money an amateur can make a difference to their career.

They have been fantastic stories and that reinforces our position. When you look at how far apart they are, they are really surprises. It is great.

The Chinese cancellation still is a huge blow.

The World Snooker Tour has a new chairman, and the game appears to be booming.

The game can look to the future with optimism despite the Covid-19 outbreak, as there are 30 tournaments with prize money up for grabs and crowds back in arenas.

The International Championship, Shanghai Masters and China Open are still not on the calendar because of travel restrictions.

"It is a huge blow to the tour and it affects the balance of the tour in a big way," he said.

We are looking at it all the time. The Chinese government won't consider any changes until after the Winter Olympics, so we are watching that closely.

"We are looking at new events in mainland Europe and mopping up areas that have shown interest over time so out of this disaster we may find some new place that takes events on a regular basis."

There are a few irons in the fire. It is very early. There is interest but there is a big cultural difference.

They are becoming battle-hardened.

Women's world number one Reanne Evans and Hong Kong's Ng On-yee have made the world rankings more diverse.

Both were given two-year tour cards from the start of the season, and while they are yet to win a match, they are both drawing comparisons with one another.

The players are on the Tour because of their abilities. There is no reason why we shouldn't have more women on the tour.

They are becoming battle-hardened. They have not won many games yet, but they are learning and that will give them a lot of confidence going forward.

"We have seen it in darts and there is no reason a woman can't do the same in this sport."

The analysis was done.

Jamie is a reporter for Radio 5 Live.

The new man in charge of the World Snooker Tour gave his thoughts on the sport and where he wants to take it, so it was fascinating to hear him.

The WST disagreed with the comments that amateur players shouldn't be on tour, so it was no surprise to hear him say that amateurs making up the numbers at tournaments is good for the development of the global game.

Snooker fans will be happy to hear that the sport can cope with the financial loss of big overseas events like those in the Far East and that they are interested in staging new tournaments in places like North America.

There was a hint that more female players could be given two-year tour cards in the future after Reanne Evans and Ng On-yee played in the TV stages of the UK Championship for the first time in York.
