A source familiar with the situation confirmed on Friday that the New York Mets are in agreement on a two-year, $20 million contract with free-agent infielder Eduardo Escobar.

After being traded from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Milwaukee Brewers last season, second baseman Alcides Escobar played 18 games at first base.

After the trade in July, he slashed.252/.322/.474, with 28 home runs, but was better. He appeared at both first and third base for the Brewers.

The Mets have an opening at third base, but they are likely to move Escobar around the diamond as needed. If the team doesn't re-sign second baseman Javier Baez, he could see time at second as well. He has played third base in 329 games, but has also played at the other positions.

As a right-handed batter,Escobar has been better than a left-handed one. He hit 30 points higher from the right side of the batter's box. He has been a leader and teammate for 11 years.

His deal with the Mets is pending a physical and was first reported by MLB Network.
