The Dallas Cowboys may hold out star running back Ezekiel Elliott for their Thursday road game against the New Orleans Saints to give him time to recover from his knee injury.

This is an important season for the three-time Pro Bowler, even though the Cowboys signed him to a six-year contract extension in 2019. Because of an injury suffered by the Cowboys quarterback, the final 11 games of the year could be blamed for some of the struggles of Elliott. The lack of a consistent passing game without the leader allowed opposing defenses to stop the running game.

Tony Pollard was a key part of Mike McCarthy's offense. The second-year back scored five total touchdown on 129 touches in 2020.

The lead back for the Cowboys is Elliott. Through 11 games, he has 720 rushing yards and 160 carries. Pollard had 531 yards on 100 carries.

The offensive nucleus is stronger now than it was when he first entered the league, and that's a good thing. Since the start of 2016 the 26 year old has averaged 283 carries per year.

Pollard will take over as Dallas' lead running back, with Clement serving as the backup.
