One of the greatest composers or lyricists in musical theater history, Stephen Sondheim earned a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. A Broadway theater was named for him in 2010, a rare honor for someone still alive. After Oscar Hammerstein encouraged him to write music and lyrics for the musicals West Side Story and Gypsy, he rose to prominence as a writer and composer. The sudden death of Stephen Sondheim comes as his work has been a centerpiece of New York theater's resurgence, with a delayed Broadway revival of Company and an acclaimed off-Broadway production of Assassins both starting performances this month. At the first performance of Company on November 15th, a speech was delivered by actress and singer, Patti LuPone, dedicating the performance to Sondheim.

Inside and outside the world of theater reacted to the death of Sondheim. Andrew Lloyd Webber, a composer who worked on musicals like Phantom of the Opera and Cats, predicted that thetribution to theatre will never be equalled because of the influence of Stephen Sondheim. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio referred to composer Stephen Sondheim as a legend in a Friday evening message.
