Spotify says it’s ‘retiring’ Car View without an immediate replacement

Car View could be activated when connected to your car via the internet.

The Car View feature was introduced at the beginning of the year as a way to make the app less distract and easier to control while driving. It is not clear if the feature is going away on all platforms or only on the platform of choice, and many users are unhappy that it is being removed without a replacement.

Confirmation of the change came back in October, when a Spotify moderator responded to a post on its community forum asking why the feature was missing. The person who moderated wrote.

The car view feature is retiring. This doesn't mean we don't want to improve on how our users listen to Spotify while driving We are exploring a variety of new ways to deliver the best in-car listening experience. It is necessary to retire car-view in order to make way for new innovations coming down the track.

For the time being, please bear with us. One way to improve the experience is to listen hands-free via the internet. You can navigate while listening to the service with this feature. You can link your accounts and say "Hey Google, play Spotify"

A follow-up comment from another person said that the in-car Now Playing View feature was being retired to make way for new features.

The removal of the Car View made it harder for people to use the service safely, as pointed out by the comments section of the post. The Car View device, which acts as a display and remote control for the music streaming service, is currently only available to Premium subscribers via a wait list.

Some people are unhappy with the change.

Car View works on my phone, but not on my phone. The settings screen of the app has a section for cars, but it only has a button to set up a Car Thing and a text that says to always pay attention to the road and abide with all traffic regulations. The Verge requested clarification on whether or not Car View would be retired on all platforms.

You can get a rough approximation of the Car View from the app on your phone.

If Car View is removed from the app, you can still control your music with a voice command, but only if you add "on Spotify" on the end of your voice command. For example, you can play a song on the service. If music is playing from the service, saying "Next track" or "pause" will work. It's possible to use your preferred streaming service without having to ask, but it's a little flaky.

On both platforms, you can use the default feature of the Google Assistant to use the music service, and you can also use the controls within the Maps app. Some cars will allow you to control things with your phone. You can run the latter on your phone's screen, which will give you a similar interface to Car View.

The thread has over 100 comments, but the moderators haven't responded with an estimate on when users can expect a replacement for Car View or what that replacement will look like. It is difficult to believe that the feature could not be kept active while the replacement was being worked on, but it seems determined to keep going. If we hear back, we will update this story if the user backlash affected its plans.
