Trump lashed out at Gen. Mark Milley, Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.

Woodward and Costa were accused of making up information in their book.

He said Milley should be tried for treason for calling his Chinese counterpart.

Donald Trump said that Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, should be tried for treason for taking extraordinary steps to prevent a war with China during the Trump presidency.

In his lengthy statement, Trump skewered The Washington Post's Bob Woodward and Robert Costa's reporting in the book "Peril," and called Milley "one of the dumber generals in the military."

Does anyone really believe that Bob Woodward and Robert Costa are implying in their book of fiction that I was planning to go to war with China, but that one of the dumber generals in the military called the Chinese to tell them? If he called, he should be tried for treason.

"I didn't think about war with China until after I won the war on trade," Trump said.

Milley made two phone calls to the Chinese general on October 30, 2020 and January 8, 2021, after the Capitol siege.

The book said that the January 6 insurrection had stirred up China but also caused Russia, Iran, and other nations to go on high alert to monitor the American military and political events in the United States.

According to the book, Milley said that half the world was nervous. The general told the chiefs to keep an eye on things all the time. The book states that he instructed the CIA Director to "aggressively watch everything" after the phone call with Li.

After "Peril" was released, Trump suggested that Milley should be tried for treason.

It's hard to believe that he would have called China and told them of an attack, if it's true, said Trump on Newsmax.

Milley defended his calls with Li. "I am certain that President Trump did not intend on attacking the Chinese," Milley testified to Congress, adding that his calls were motivated by "concerning intelligence" that China believed an attack was imminent.

In his statement on Friday, Trump accused Woodward and Costa of trying to sell their book to the public. The former president said that he wondered if history would believe the books Woodward has published about the Trump presidency. How do you get your name back?

The Watergate scandal, in which Woodward and Bernstein reported, ultimately sank Richard Nixon's presidency. Since then, Woodward has written a number of books about both Democratic and Republican presidents' time in office and has written three books about the Trump presidency.

The two men sat down for a series of interviews for Woodward's second book about the Trump era. Trump admitted that he downplayed the COVID-19 epidemic to avoid scaring the public.

The US has been taken over by scammers and hoaxers, and we have to take it back, said Trump in his statement.

The Post and Milley did not respond to requests for comment.
