Belgium records Europe's first case of the new coronavirus variant spreading in southern Africa

The first case of the new coronaviruses variant was recorded in Belgium.

A traveler who entered Belgium and tested positive for the B 1.1.529 variant was announced by Frank Vandenbroucke.

"Don't panic, but be careful," Vandenbroucke said.

South Africa, Botswana, and a single case in Hong Kong were the only places where previous cases had been restricted.

The variant is spreading in South Africa. In less than two weeks, B. 1.1.529 completely overtook the Delta andBeta variant that were present in one of the country's provinces.

The European Union is considering a bloc-wide ban on flights from southern African countries.
