‘Encanto’ Tops Box Office With Soft $7.5M Wednesday As ‘Gucci’ Earns $4.2M

Everyone in the family has magical powers, but Mirabel Madrigal struggles to fit in. She is determined to prove that she is a part of this extraordinary family and that she is not alone in her house. The film will be released in the US on November 24, 2021. All rights are reserved.

DISNEY.

Encanto was the top movie on Wednesday, earning $7.5 million on its opening day. The previous Disney Thanksgiving toon debut was over a decade ago, and this week's previews are well below that. Disney has used Wednesday grosses between $11 million and $18 million for films on this five-day weekend over the last decade, but this $7.5 million opening day is half of that. It is also below the live-action debut for Knives Out and Creed II.

It could end up opening closer to a title from the same company as Disney's Thanksgiving bow. The Good Dinosaur, which was considered a mediocre launch in 2015, has legs out like the musical folktale, which is one of Disney's better animated films of late. That may be a sign of hope.

It will end the holiday with $35-$39 million, if it just legs out like Moana orRalph Breaks The Internet. The film may be a little leggier now that the Covid variables are still viable, and I would like to think that the theatrical-only release will last into Christmas. Encanto, Disney's 60th animated feature, may not open as well as The Princess and the Frog, which opened in December of 2009.

Lady Gaga and Adam Driver are in a movie.

The MGM.

MGM's House of Gucci earned $4.2 million on its opening day. That is not a huge amount, but considering the wave of $4 million-$6 million debuts for adult-skewing dramas over the last two years, it is thus-far a Covid curve win. Rent earned $17.1 million from a $4.75 million Wednesday back in 2005 if the Little monsters showed up for Lady Gaga yesterday and the 2.5 hour, R-rated crime melodrama doesn't work as the consensus pick for families hanging out over the holiday. The movie would have a 15 million debut gross.

The holiday legs of Knives Out would get Ridley Scott's second attempt at saving big-scale grown-up theatrical cinema to $20 million over the holiday. It will flirt with $29 million if it legs like Creed. Even a $20 million launch gives hope for the viability of reasonably-budgeted adult-skewing biggies. House of Gucci will have an advantage if West Side Story doesn't break out next month, because it will be the only seasonal Oscar contender that audiences have actually seen.

'Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City'

Sony.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City opened on Wednesday with over two million dollars. The first two games in the zombie series are more faithful to the first film in the series. If you like the Resident Evil movies, you will appreciate the brutal zombie carnage way before it was cool again.

80% of the work is devoted to being faithful to the source material and a game cast left to fend for themselves. The movie will make $11 million over the holiday if it legs out like Robin Hood, which made $13 million from a $3.2 million Wednesday in 2018). How well Ghostbusters: Afterlife performs is of lesser consequence, since it is a remake of a movie. I will be amused if this remake earns the same amount of money as Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
