Feeding pet dogs just once a day might keep them healthier as they age

Dogs that are fed once a day are less likely to be diagnosed with age related conditions than dogs that are fed more often, according to an analysis of surveys.

The University of Washington's Matt Kaeberlein says that dog owners should stick with their current regime. We don't recommend that people change the way they feed their dogs.

The Dog Aging Project was established by Kaeberlein to study the genetics and environmental causes of aging in dogs and other animals. A survey can be filled in by any dog owner in the US.

Some animals, such as mice, can be slowed down by intermittent fasts. Kaeberlein looked at the project data to see if dogs fed once a day were more or less likely to be diagnosed with age related conditions, such as cancer and dementia.

Dogs that are fed once per day are less likely to have a diagnosis. It is pretty compelling evidence, says Kaeberlein.

He says that the study hasn't established causality. The project team wants to know if the owners of their dogs are overweight. It's difficult to measure the amount of calories in a survey. The team would like to carry out a trial to see if changing some dogs to once-a-day-feeding affects their health.

Your dog may not like you as much as you think.

Alex German at the University ofLiverpool in the UK says that the study's strength is its large numbers and sound statistical methods. He agrees that people shouldn't change the way they feed their dogs until further studies are done.

Many organizations advise to feed dogs twice a day. If more studies show that once-a-day feeding is better for dogs than the amount of food they eat, it could lead to a change in advice.

Kaeberlein says that once-a-day-feeding is only beneficial for dogs because of their evolutionary history as hunters. He says time-restricted feeding might be beneficial for other animals.

The dog aging project is looking for more participants and hopes to go international in 2022, says Kaeberlein.
