The best games to play this Thanksgiving weekend

The image is called "halobut big."

Many people will have the chance to relax and log hours of gaming during the Thanksgiving weekend. The way Los Angeles' 405 freeway is crammed with travelers every Thanksgiving season is almost certain to be the same with Halo Infinite's multiplayer. If you can't connect to a game of capture the flag, or if you don't like the game at all, here are the best non-Halo Infinite games we're playing to make it through the holiday.

Andrew is from Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier.

It turns out that the game that pulled me away from Fortnite was a game set in the world of Final Fantasy VII. The First Soldier is not expected. The SOLDIER program is so important to the storyline that it is set a few decades before the events of FF7. Instead of a single-player adventure like you might expect, it is a battle Royale crossed with anRPG. It's like a game ofFortnite without the building, but with magic spells and monsters to fight. The last player standing is thrilled, but with deeper character progression and familiar locations to battle it out in. There is something really fun about perching on top of Seventh Heaven with a sniper rifle, and the map could use some more points of interest. Be careful not to eat those Tonberries.

Sean is a Genshin Impact.

My five- and two-year-old daughters ask me to fire up Genshin Impact so they can watch an array of sword and magic-wielding waifus explore a Breath of the Wild-style landscape. I initially sat on this game, turned off by the pay-to-avoid-grinding mechanics and the idea that it was a clone of a video game. It is surprisingly deep so far. The initial European castle / church vibe, with fights against goblins and automatons, soon gives way to an idyllic ancient Chinese landscape, including a gorgeous harbor town filled with agents of intrigue. Many spots are inspired by real-world Chinese locations. My daughters only get to watch a little bit before bed, so that is as far as we have gone. I am going to try to get us to Genshin Impact so that we can visit Japan as well. It is a great showcase game for new hardware, it runs amazingly on PS5 and the latest iPhones.

Makena is from Stardew Valley.

I will be spending hours on a train, in a car, and in the air trying to visit my partner and his family before the holiday season is over. I don't like playing games when I'm traveling, it's hard to focus on a game when I'm constantly worried about missing my boarding time or losing my tickets. I can go fishing or care for my cows in between the stress of the airport or train station with Stardew. My partner and I share a farm in the game, and we can talk about our plans for the upcoming season or designate chores. The collaborative nature of the game gives me an opportunity to connect with my partner while I travel rather than just reading a book. It is a pleasant way to pass time.

Death's Door is called Adi.

Death's Door came out on Tuesday, and I haven't played it yet, but I can vouch for its potential. It is an action-exploration game about a crow who collects souls. I heard it was a little like Hollow Knight, a game I had played for 70 hours. I have been reading great things about it on PC. Either way, I have the start screen ready and my beginner's guide.

Alice is in Age of Empires 4.

The latest iteration of the open-world game, called "Forza Horizon", is the most brutal of the bunch. Most open-world titles make my eyes glaze over when I see how big the map is, filled with tons of tiny markers that I will never pick up and activities I will never complete. Even with the engine running at 180MPH, cruising around Mexico in a modern car is still very meditative. I know the map is full of things to do, but it doesn't have the same excitement as its competitors. There is a level of appreciation for the extensive library of cars that I will never truly understand, but there will always be a strange, primeval part of me that loves something that goes VROOM, even as someone who has never owned a car.

I will be spending a decent amount of time with Age of Empires 4. I was able to bulldoze my way through the single-player campaigns, but I have been working on my nerves to fight the intermediate players. It has been too long since we had an honest real-time strategy to celebrate, and I know I am not the only one with a special place in my heart for the Age of Empires franchise. I intend to spend some quality time with AOE4.

Shin Megami Tensei V, _RE4 VR, _InsCryption, _Shin Megami Tensei V.

I was going to say that it was good fun, but Ash asked us not to say it. I was content with skipping Inscryption, but the industry was very positive about it. I am not much of a card game person, but there is enough intrigue and unique elements at play to keep me going. I encourage you to give it a try if you have a PC.

Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei V for the Switch was a game that I was able to resist at first. I finally played through the last part of the game in the year 2021, so I was hesitant to join. It was fun but also tiring. I had to stop and think if I really wanted to play the game for more than an hour because the battles felt similar to the ones in SMT V. I will let you know how it is when I finish it.

The RE4 for the Quest 2 is amazing. The team at Armature Studio made the game feel fresh, even though they touched the right amount of things. I want to take my time. It is too special to eat on Turkey Day.

Gloria is a fan of Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2.0 Update.

I haven't been with my villagers in months, and I was playing in time travel mode to check out the special events I missed. I have been avoiding my switch until I have time to go all in. With Black Friday and Buying Guides out of the way, I can't wait to escape to my virtual island.

I am looking forward to drinking a latte at Brewster's, getting Kapp'n to serenade me on the way to exotic islands, buying a sick gaming setup for my house, and learning to cook in the game. Even though I don't like my cards, I'll try to bring the new villagers to my island. I want to get into ACNH 2.0 without having to weed. I can not wrap my mind around the Happy Home Paradise expansion pack yet.

I bought a used Kinect just for this series and am excited to try Just Dance 2022. I need to work on my Thanksgiving dinner.

Antonio is a fan of Dark Souls and Metroid.

I have not played any games since I got SWOLED, so I am hoping I can play some during the holiday, when I am not with family or working on our Black Friday deals coverage. I had a false start to the game when I got lost, but I loved it from the beginning. A fresh restart from the beginning has solved that, so I need to play a lot to not forget. Games could use a recap of what you did in the last two weeks.

I got Dark Souls Remastered on PC as a birthday gift and I am looking forward to feeling some pain during the holiday that isn't related to food comas and eating too much.

Kentucky Route Zero is in Mitchell.

I plan on finishing the Kentucky Route Zero replay during a few flights, and it feels like it would be perfect for holiday nights where you want to end your night after everyone has left. KRZ is almost all vibes with little game play, but I love re-experiencing the twists and turns of its Americana-inspired story, which is as weird and mythic as it is deeply sad. It may not be the game to play right before a cheerful Thanksgiving dinner, but if you are looking for something to turn over and over in your mind, Kentucky Route Zero is the game for you.

Ash is in the sequel to the film, Ace Attorney Chronicles 2.

I am terrified of space and in love with it. The wonder of a simple exploration game is replaced by the terror of space in this game. You pilot a weird, orb-like spaceship through empty but beautiful alien worlds, picking up power-ups that make it roll faster and glide longer as you learn the story of a doomed expedition to Jupiter. It is stunning. I am in awe of my surroundings as I bounce off sand dunes and skip over rolling waves, trying to hit the right piece of land in just the right way that will make my craft zoom into the cloud-strewn atmosphere. It is wonderful. The best parts of Interstellar and Sunshine are pure space exploration without all the messy human stuff.

I am taking care of a family member who is recovering from surgery. The game is called Ace Attorney Chronicles 2. I have trouble sleeping since I am away from home and have to keep track of medicine, appointments, and meal plans. As I work to defend the innocent and solve murders most foul, I have been slowly making my way through the sequel, letting my mind drift off. The new characters and the untangling of plot points are what I love about the game. Even if some of the puzzles require a lot of logic, Ace Attorney Chronicles 2 is the perfect nighttime calming agent.

Barbara is a Doctor Who fan.

I haven't been playing a lot of games lately, except for a few Scrabble games that I've been playing with friends for three years. I just got a brand new phone, and so I am going to play a bunch of games on that small screen. Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins is the first game I am going to start with, because several of the games mentioned here are on my list. What can I say? I like Doctor Who so much that an adventure game that allows me to interact and solve puzzles with a Timelord is the perfect way for me to get back into the game.

Richard is a fan of the games, such as the title of the game, the game of the game, and the game of the game.

I might get into some Big Team Battle this weekend. I will stick to the game that the Xbox Museum says is my most played for the next three years. The new map in the game did a good job of keeping things fresh without breaking what it does well. If you know how to navigate the area without jumping into the chasm, you can get on the game's other maps.

When I need to change things up, I play the game. They haven't addressed the issue of having too many options for what you can do next in the series. I have been waiting for the first game in the series to have good lighting.

Victoria is the owner of Pokémon Shining Pearl.

In real life, my camera roll is just thousands of photos of my cat and dog. It is so relaxing. There are no battles. It's my job to be their paparazzo, because it's just dozens of cute pokémon going about their business. An Alolan Raichu is outside? Yes, please. Mantine is leaping out of the sea. Yes. There are lots of Bidoof butt to go around.

I live my best life when I need a break from Professor Mirror, because he doesn't appreciate the rule of thirds. The contests are a nice change of pace since I am not a big fan of the endless gym battle grind. There is no better way to distract from family drama than with cute pokémon.
