2023 Women's World Cup: Ruthless Northern Ireland dismantle North Macedonia in record win

All the goals in NI's record-breaking win.

Rachel Furness equalled David Healy's record of 36 goals for Northern Ireland with a hat-trick in an 11-0 thumping of North Macedonia.

Simone Magill netted four in Skopje as they moved level on points with Austria in second place.

In the first half, Rebecca, Lauren, and Kirsty scored.

They beat Taiwan 8-0 in the record books, but Magill and Rebecca Holloway made it 10.

The players delivered in style to keep the pressure on England and Austria, who had both put eight past North Macedonia, in the race for a World Cup spot.

The visitors netted seven times in the first-half as Northern Ireland were expected to dominate against a side 83 places lower in the world rankings.

NI move level with Austria and are just two points behind England at the halfway point of the campaign after the top two sides in Group D face-off on Saturday.

The storm is going to Northern Ireland.

After seeing plenty of the ball in the early stages, Northern Ireland took the lead inside four minutes when Furness kept her cool to convert from close range.

The right-back smashed in her maiden international goal on 10 minutes after being afforded too much time and space in the area, after her effort was brilliantly cleared off the line by Viktorija Nedeva.

Magill made it three when the in-form forward scored after racing onto Furness' flick-on, and the latter was involved again as she was hauled down in the box on 15 minutes.

The 33-year-old had another chance from 12 yards when the Irishman won a soft penalty after the long-range effort rattled the bar. The ball was hacked to safety this time, thanks to the foresight of the goalkeeper.

Rebecca McKenna scored her first international goal.

Wade curled home a fifth when the ball broke to her on the edge of the box, and McGuinness tucked away a sixth from the left when she raced onto the ball.

After setting-up Wade and McGuinness, the defender gave away a hat-trick of assists when she cut the ball back for Magill to score.

The first half was brilliant from Northern Ireland and their most ruthless 45 minutes under Shiels.

Visitors are easy to beat.

The Crusaders' Julie Nelson was replaced by Rachel McLaren in place of her booked teammate, while captain Callaghan was replaced by Chloe McCarron.

The second-half lacked the same relentless energy as the first, although Wade hit the bar from 20 yards.

Furness saw a powerful 30-yard drive tipped onto the bar by Lekovska and McKenna, who could have ended the game with a hat-trick, but missed from the edge of the area.

Furness completed her hat-trick on the 68th minute when she fired past Lekovska from close range, and she was soon joined by Magill on three goals when he capitalised on a poor goal kick.

Simone Magill was in front of goal for her club and country.

Magill, substitute Kelsie Burrows and Wade missed good opportunities to reach double figures, while Nadene Caldwell forced a save from Lekovska after skipping into the area.

The pressure finally told as Magill found the back of the net for her fourth, before she converted from close range in injury-time to complete NI's landmark victory.

The teams play the reverse fixture in Belfast on Monday and Shiels will be hoping his players can repeat the performance in front of a sold-out Seaview.
