There is a huge labor shortage in the US.

The CEO of a solar-panel company said that job seekers aren't showing up for their interviews.

Montana Busch, CEO of Alternative Energy Southeast in northern Georgia, told Insider that he had scheduled interviews with eight candidates for a job as an electrician, but only two showed up.

Companies across the US are competing for workers in a labor shortage. Some are increasing pay and offering better benefits to attract new workers and retain existing ones. Many businesses have had to downsize because they can't find enough staff.

The challenge of attracting new entrants has been difficult in the past, but the Pandemic has made it even more difficult. Some business owners told Insider that as many as 90 percent of candidates don't show up for job interviews, and some quit after being hired. The taco-restaurant owner said he was hiring people that would show up.

Alternative Energy Southeast has 25 employees, but would like 10 more.

He said there is an unlimited amount of work in solar and that demand is increasing because customers want installation work done before the end of the fiscal year so they can claim tax credits.

Busch said that he had raised the starting wage for new solar installer hires to around $13 an hour, and for people with some experience in the construction industry to $16 or $17. He said that he offered healthcare and paid holidays.

Busch said that one of the biggest obstacles was that job seekers didn't realize that they don't need a college degree to work in the solar industry.

He said that solar can be done right out of high school. There's an idea that you have to go to college to get a good paying job.

Busch said that solar installers can get on-the-job training. He said that companies can't immediately deploy new hires on installations by themselves because solar installers need at least a year of training and supervision. He said that fixing the industry's labor shortage was a slow process.

Busch said that Alternative Energy Southeast had a low attrition rate.

"It's an employee's market right now where they have all the power, they can demand raises and companies, they have to give it to them, or that employee can probably go somewhere else and get more money if they want to," Busch said. We have been able to avoid that by treating our staff well.

The Solar Energy Industry Association has set a goal for solar to make up 30% of US electricity generation by the year 2030. The industry needed around 800,000 more workers to achieve this, according to the association.

Matthew Messer, the owner of New York Solar Maintenance, told Insider in July that hiring has been a challenge for a decade. We're competing for a small labor pool.
