Guilty Verdicts In Arbery Murder Widely Praised—Mother Says She ‘Never Thought This Day Would Come’

The new date is Nov 24, 2021.

After a jury found three white men guilty of murder and other charges, Ahmaud Arbery's parents and prominent civil rights figures raised their hands together.

The jury convicted a man of murdering Ahmaud Arbery's mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones.

The jury of 11 whites and one Black in the Deep South stood up in the courtroom and said that Black lives do matter, said Rev. Al Sharpton.

Wanda Cooper Jones said that she never thought this day would come when her son was killed.

President Joe Biden said in a statement that while the guilty verdicts reflect our justice system doing its job, that alone is not enough, calling Arbery's murder a "devastating reminder of how far we have to go in the fight for racial justice."

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said that the verdict was the right one and that vigilantism had no place in Georgia.

The jury saw the meanness in the killers' hearts, and they believed the evidence of their eyes, according to the former Democratic nominee for governor.

We did this together. "Black, white, activists, faith leaders, prosecutors, and we did this together," said the attorney for the Arbery family.

There was aContra.

Kevin Gough, an attorney for William "Roddie" Bryan, told the New York Times that they must respect the verdict. He said he would file a motion next week.

The jury found the father-and-son pair of Gregory and Travis McMichael, along with a neighbor, guilty of felony murder after more than 10 hours of deliberations. Each man will face a sentence of life in prison under Georgia law if they are convicted of a felony murder. The three men were working together to chase down Arbery with pickup trucks as he ran through a suburban Georgia neighborhood before he was killed by a shotgun. The McMichaels case brought national outrage for the slow pace of their arrest. It took 74 days for them to be taken into custody, with Bryan not being arrested until weeks after the McMichaels. The video Bryan captured of the murder, which was not made public until May 5, 2020, was crucial in prompting authorities to make the arrests.

What to watch for.

The men are still facing federal hate crimes charges. They will face a trial in February.

The defendants in the Arbery Killing have been found guilty.

Ahmaud Arbery's 2020 killing was led to by "driveway decisions".
