A Georgia jury returned guilty verdicts on Wednesday for three men who murdered Ahmaud Arbery in a Georgia neighborhood last year, which led to national outrage and galvanized Black Lives Matter activists just before the murder of George Floyd.
On October 27, 2021, the jury selection for the trial of the man accused of killing Ahmaud Arbery will take place. William "Roddie" Bryan and his neighbors, the McMichaels and Gregs, are accused of killing Ahmaud Arbery in February 2020. The photo was taken by Octavio Jones- Pool.

The McMichaels and Bryans were found guilty of murder charges.
The three men chased down Arbery with pickup trucks on February 23, 2020 as he jogs through a suburban Georgia neighborhood before the man who shot Arbery was killed.
The men were trying to arrest Arbery as part of a citizen's arrest, and the defense argued that he was going to take his gun when he confronted them.
Two of the men were found guilty of murder, but only McMichael was found guilty of malice murder.
The men are facing life in prison.
The slow response by the authorities brought the case to the forefront. The McMichaels were not arrested until May 7 after a video was released showing the men chasing Arbery. Bryan was arrested on May 21 after shooting the video. During the summer of 2020, when George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer, Arbery became a central figure in the Black Lives Matter protests, with many calling for a repeal of the citizen's arrest law. The repeal of the 1863 citizen's arrest law, which had been used to justify lynchings, was achieved in May of 2021.
What to watch for.
Three men are facing federal hate crimes charges. The charges will be tried in February.
There is a structure called the Tangent.
One of the main points in the two weeks of testimony was that Arbery showed up at a house that was under construction in the Satilla Shores neighborhood where the three men lived. The property owner said in a deposition that Arbery wasn't believed to be a suspect in the theft of items from the property. The McMichaels were suspicious of Arbery's behavior as he ran through the neighborhood on February 23, 2020. He was a frequent jogger.
Surprising fact.
The presence of Black pastors in the courtroom made for an unfair "atmosphere" according to Kevin Gough, a defense attorney representing Bryan. He said that the presence of the pastors made for a "public lynching" of the defendants. He tried to have Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton barred from the courtroom, but later apologized for his comment.
