A statue of legendary football coach Glenn "Bo" Schembechler on the University of Michigan campus has been vandalized with paint, and a message supporting sexual assault victims of a former sports doctor has been written on the steps beneath it.

The statue outside the football building was painted red and a crew was working to remove it.

The steps were written in black.

The university said in a statement that the incident was being investigated.

The law firm hired by the U-M found that officials failed to stop the late Dr. Robert Anderson despite hearing reports that he sexually assaults student athletes. The university is in mediation with lawyers who are trying to get a financial settlement for hundreds of people.

The former Michigan football players said they told Schembechler about Anderson's behavior.

Matt said he told his father that Anderson had abused him as a child. Glenn doesn't think his father was aware that Anderson was doing things that weren't right during exams.

An email was sent to the Free Press on Wednesday morning that said the action was done in solidarity with the campaign.

"Bo pulled strings and bent over backwards to make sure that Anderson could keep his job," the email continued. It is time for the world to know that Bo is responsible for the abuse of Michigan football players.

Some people want Schembechler's statue to be taken down and his name removed from the football building.

Anderson died in 2008.

The greatest coach of college football's winningest program was Schembechler. He was the head coach of the UM from 1969-89 and had 234 victories, including six seasons at Miami of Ohio.
