The cancellation of the Star Trek deal with Netflix caused a huge backlash from the international fan base of the show. It also meant that the season four premiere was going to be delayed, and that audiences were going to have to wait for the international release of Paramount+ in 2022. The streamer was going to release a limited number of countries for a series that fans had been watching for almost four years. The backlash was not worth making people wait to subscribe to another service.
We hear you, Star Trek: Discovery fans. A new statement was released on the Star Trek official website and the franchise's official social media channels this morning. The cast, crew, and characters bring the show to life and what it represents to so many people around the world. The fans of Star Trek have always been put first. We want to do the same thing.
The plan isn't as simple as if the series continues to release on the internet. Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Finn, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, and Paraguay are countries that have already begun rolling out Paramount+.
In Europe, episodes will be released at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through the free streaming platform. The UK, Germany, France, Russia, South Korea, and other countries will be able to purchase new episodes of Discovery on select digital platforms on November 26.
It is not an ideal situation, but now that fans can choose to watch Discovery on a new service or pay for individual episodes at a time, it will be better. It is better to not have to reveal anything for the next few months and even longer as Paramount+ continues its global roll out. The statement concludes, "We too are super fans of Star Trek and incredibly proud of Discovery." We will give this franchise and its fans all the global love and visibility it deserves in our expanding universe on Paramount+.
