What Your Miles And Points Are Worth – Average Valuations Per Currency

Average valuations per currency are what your miles and points are worth.

It can be hard to know what your points are worth. We will break down each major program for you, because there are many factors that go into the valuation of award program currencies. You can know what your points are worth by looking at it. How we determined the values is the first thing we will look at. We will move through hotel programs, airline programs, and transferrable currencies. We will look at the range of values and average to understand what a typical value for those points would be. It is possible to understand what your points and miles should be worth in this way.

How did we arrive at the numbers?

The real-life redemption opportunities should be used to determine what miles and points are worth. 5 standard bookings were compared to the points required at the properties. This included low season and high season bookings. We started with dummy bookings for economy, premium economy and business class for each airline program. We got a range of points valuations after comparing 5 of these to the points required for the booking.

We ended with the transferrable currencies. It was easy to know what value could be found in the programs we could use. The value range is based on the transfer partner values.

What is not included.

The valuation should include what isn't included. Less popular hotel chains and all cruise programs were not examined. When internal points programs are not transferrable, we didn't include them. If they can't be transferred to an airline, hotel, or other place, they retain a fixed value.

What are the hotel points worth?

To find the value range for what hotel points are worth, we looked at the cost of a standard room against the points required for booking that same room. A range of hotels were considered. The range and average of what these points are worth will be given to you. Excellent if your redemption is more than this. If it is much lower than the average, you should save your points and pay cash.

What airline miles are worth?

We started with dummy bookings to figure out what airline miles are worth. Most of the people in this hobby are based in the US, so our bookings were based on where they were. Premium cabin sweet spots were considered to understand the true range of what is really possible in terms of redemption value.

Economy and business class cabins were compared. A mix of dates, destinations, and times of year provided a range of point values, and then the average was taken from these. It is important to remember that not all flights are available on all dates, and what your points and miles are worth can be skewed by comparing them to an inflated price on a popular day vs a low price on unpopular dates.

Summary of what airline miles are worth.

Some of these numbers can look great, but there are 2 things to keep in mind. These are averages from a range of test bookings. Values can change as travel plans are changed. On the other hand, if you exceed them on your next booking, you may not achieve these values. Airlines over-price their flights and values are inflated. The Virgin Atlantic miles value is a perfect example. The flight costs more than other competitors on the same day. Is my miles more valuable because they over-estimate/over-charge on the flight? When it is time to actually use your miles and points, there are things to keep in mind.

What Transferrable Currencies are worth?

Once we know what points and miles are worth in the individual programs, this is the basis for transferrable currency values. Transferrable currencies are points programs in which you can transfer them to other programs. You can find the master list of all transferrable programs here. The range and average value of the programs that can be transferred to for redemptions of hotels or flights are what determines the value of each program.

What are the points worth? Final thoughts.

We hope the breakdown is useful. We learned a lot. First, we looked at the various programs you can transfer your points and miles to, and then we looked at a range and average of redemption values in these programs. We know what we can use the points programs for, so we decided the range and average value for them.

Your experiences can change. If you redeem for a flight that is really expensive, your points and miles will be worth more. The redemption value is deflated if the flight goes on sale. When you should and shouldn't use your points and miles is a personal decision, not only based on what they're worth and the redemption value, but also what you are and aren't willing to pay for in cash. We hope this can be a guide to what points and miles are worth, so you can get a base value for what to expect in your redemptions.
