The New York Jets stopped their quarterback carousel on Tuesday, this time stopping on a new player.
A league source confirmed that the No. 2 overall pick will start against the Houston Texans on Sunday. He was cleared after two medical evaluations.
It was a matter of when the return to Wilson would happen. Wilson and Josh Johnson are the only active quarterbacks, because Mike White and Joe Flacco were put on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday. The decision to start Wilson had nothing to do with their status, according to a source.
Wilson will be the third different starter. He was replaced by White, who started three games before being benched in favor of Flacco.
Wilson was expected to miss two to four weeks because of the injury he sustained in Week 7.
A lot happened while he recuperated. In his first career start, White threw for 405 yards and two scores in an upset of the Cincinnati Bengals. Robert Saleh refused to say if Wilson would return to his role once healthy.
White lost his touch with four turnovers in Week 10, which led to a controversial change for the Miami game. The decision to start Flacco over White was met with a lot of criticism, but he did a good job in the loss.
Wilson has practiced on a limited basis for the past two weeks, but the organization didn't want to put him on the field until he was 100% healthy.
"We're going to make sure he's protected," he said. "When he's fully healthy and he feels like there's no limitations with his ability to play where he's not thinking about the knee, we'll get him back out there."
Wilson is a flop as the starter, with a 0-6 record, with four touchdown passes, nine interceptions and a 27.0 QBR, which is 31st out of 33 qualified passers.
The return to Wilson was reported by The Athletic.
