Apple recently updated its website to say that the upcoming watchOS 8 and the upcomingios 15 feature that will allow you to add your driver's license or state ID to your phone in the US has been delayed until early 2022. The feature would launch in late 2021.
Apple said in September that Georgia and Arizona would be the first states to introduce the feature to residents. Apple said it was in discussions with many more U.S. states as it works to offer the feature nationwide in the future.
The feature is not enabled in the latest version of the software, and Apple has not provided a specific release date for the feature beyond early 2022.
Users will be able to present a digital ID at the security checkpoint in select airports. Users will be able to add a driver's license or state ID to the app by tapping the plus sign at the top of the app, and then simply tap their phone or Apple Watch to present their ID to the TSA, without taking out their physical card.
Users of an identity reader will see a prompt on their device if they tap their phone or watch. After authorizing with Face ID or Touch ID, users don't need to show or give their device to the security officer for their ID, according to Apple.
Privacy and security are emphasized by Apple. Users will be required to take a photo of their face when they add a driver's license or state ID card to the Wallet app. Users will be prompted to do a series of facial and head movements during the setup process.
