Darwin Nunez: Benfica striker wanted by Barcelona who could return to haunt Catalans

In their first meeting this season, Darwin Nunez scored twice.

Barcelona must avoid defeat against Benfica on Tuesday to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.

The club's board could have listened to the advice of their former player Luis Suarez.

Darwin played for Almeria in the Spanish second tier, but was urged to sign by his friend, Luis Suarez.

"I have 15 years of international experience, so I know a thing or two about forwards," he said. "I told them to pay attention to this one, he's very good, he has very interesting things," I said.

Barcelona wanted a deal. The financial crisis the club still faces made it difficult for them to agree on a transfer fee with Benfica, who spent a club record transfer fee of 24m euros on the forward.

Barcelona showed a strong interest in Darwin. They were already going through a tough time when we discussed how the operation would be and that complicated things.

He would have moved to Barcelona had those talks not happened.

The possibility of them leaving Darwin with us for another season on loan was on the table. They had done it before with Pedri at Las Palmas.

The 22-year-old will be going to the Nou Camp for the first time with the chance to haunt them again.

You're not taking my other son.

For a kid who grew up in a small town on the Brazilian border, playing Barcelona away from home is no pressure at all.

The humble Nunez family has always stayed together despite their struggles.

Junior, the eldest son, was the first to leave home, packing his things to the capital of Montevideo after Jose Perdomo came for him.

The former player, who played for four different teams in the 1990s, worked as a scout for his former club in the north of the country. Perdomo joked on his way out that he would come back for their youngest son, Darwin.

He was not joking, but things did not go as he had hoped.

The father of Darwin agreed to bring him to Penarol after Perdomo got in touch with him again.

When I arrived in Artigas, the mother told me that Darwin would not take Junior. I don't want to lose him because he's too young. I miss Junior a lot.

It was a very difficult situation. The mother took a long time to convince her. She wasn't very friendly to me when we finally did. She was very angry.

Darwin rose through the ranks at the club after he got to the club. At the age of 16, he took part in his first senior team training session. He couldn't have been happier.

He has no ceiling.

It was too good to be true.

He had surgery on his knee at the beginning of the year and was out for a year and a half. He contemplated retiring from football after the blow.

His family and colleagues stood by him and he was able to get a place in the South American Under-20 Championship the following year.

Darwin took advice from the team's psychologist after his performance in Chile was heavily criticized on social media. He stopped checking his phone after the matches.

He got himself on the radar of Almeria despite that. The Spaniards gambled on a young forward and paid 8 million euro for him in 2019. He scored 16 goals in his first season for the club.

If we had gone for Darwin six months later, we wouldn't have been able to purchase him.

We did it in a moment when he was about to score, but hadn't become a sure thing. He did not do well for the under-20 side, but we believed there was something special about him.

We were all wondering how he would do in normal circumstances when he left. Imagine what he's capable of if he did what he did.

"If you consider Diego Forlan, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, they all have different characteristics, so I don't think you can compare them," Perdomo said.

Darwin has no ceiling and I think he still has a lot to evolve. He's the number nine in the country.
