The NBA announced on Monday that Los Angeles Lakers star James had been suspended for one game for hitting Detroit Pistons center Stewart in the face.

Stewart was suspended for two games for "escalating an on-court altercation by repeatedly and aggressively pursuing" James, who will serve his suspension on Tuesday when the Lakers visit the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

The Pistons will play Miami at home on Tuesday and then travel to Milwaukee to play the Brewers on Wednesday. James and Stewart will lose a lot of money.

James and Stewart were competing for position during a free throw in the third quarter. Stewart had blood streaming from his eye when James swung his elbow and hit him.

For a moment, cooler heads seemed to prevail. Stewart was guided away from the spot where the contact occurred by teammates and coaches, but he appeared to become more incensed along the way. He tried to run towards James.

A number of people blocked his path to make sure the incident didn't get out of hand. James and Stewart were both ejected from the game after being assessed technical fouls.

James has won four NBA titles with three teams but has never been suspended. The Lakers and Pistons will play in Los Angeles on Sunday.
