Kyle Rittenhouse is expected to face another legal battle soon over the $2 million bail he posted after his arrest.
Attorneys for Rittenhouse argued that the money should be given to the teenager because it was raised for him.
The other party staked their claim to the money before Rittenhouse's attorneys did.
The Fightback Foundation, an organization run by right-wing lawyer Lin Wood, filed a motion asking that the money be returned. The seven-figure amount was posted by Rittenhouse's former attorney John Pierce and included contributions that Rittenhouse's mother, Wendy, helped collect.
Mark Richards, Rittenhouse defense attorney, said after the teen's acquittal that John Pierce was the person who posted the bond. All of the money was raised for Kyle. Fightback and Lin Wood say they are entitled to it. I believe that half a million dollars came from Wendy Rittenhouse. There will be a fight over that.
The Fightback Foundation wired the money to Pierce for the benefit of Wendy Rittenhouse, according to the motion. Rittenhouse terminated the attorney's affiliation with Fightback.
Individual donors who intended their funds to be used to support Kyle Rittenhouse are included in bond funds. It would be up to the court to decide if the remaining bond funds should be donated or posted for Mr. Rittenhouse.
A lawyer for the foundation wrote a letter to the judge who presided over Rittenhouse's case, saying the money should be returned to Wood's organization. The letter states that when he posted the money, he was an agent of the organization, but he no longer had any ties to the group.
The Fightback Foundation will get $2,000,000.
After the verdict, Pierce did not respond to a request for comment. According to federal court records, Pierce acknowledges that someone else may have a legal right to the money and that he doesn't want it to be his poster.
The current Rittenhouse defense fund, which prosecutors say is run by Kyle Rittenhouse, objected to Fightback's initial request.
While we are busting our humps trying to raise money and see Kyle acquitted, Lin Wood is sending letters to the court demanding $2 million in donations for Kyle to give to him. Lin Wood kept it classy.
Rittenhouse shot and killed Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber and injured Gaige Grosskreutz while guarding a used car lot in downtown Kenosha. The men were in the town after the shooting of a black man by a white police officer.
He was acquitted of all five felony counts against him by a jury in the county. During the trial, a gun charge and curfew violation were dismissed.
Richards blasted Wood and Pierce for putting their own political agendas ahead of Rittenhouse.
Richards said that they wanted to use Kyle for a cause and something that was inappropriate. The only thing that mattered to me was the outcome of the trial. I represent clients.

Climate change isn't the reason some coal-fired power plants are shutting down. Dozens of plants nationwide plan to stop burning coal this decade to comply with more stringent federal wastewater guidelines, as the industry continues moving away from the planet-warming fossil fuel to make electricity. The new wastewater rule requires power plants to clean coal ash and toxic heavy metals from their wastewater before it is dumped into streams and rivers.
