It's really sorry, that's what GoDaddy wants you to know.
The web-hosting service said Monday that it was the victim of a hack and that customer data was stolen. The company said in a statement filed to the SEC that it only realized something was off last week, but that whoever got access to its ManagedWordPress hosting environment did so back in September.
The company apologized for the incident and the concern it causes for their customers. "We take our responsibility to protect our customers' data very seriously and never want to let them down."
According to its SEC disclosure, hackers got access to as many as 1.2 million current and inactive customers of the website. The database usernames and passwords were also exposed.
The company claims to have over 20 million customers.
The company confirmed that it is in the process of notifying customers via email.
"We are taking steps to strengthen our system with additional layers of protection, and we will learn from this incident," the statement continued.
The SEC disclosure from GoDaddy makes it clear that stolen customer emails and customer numbers may lead to targeted phishing of its customers. This would be a bad look for any organization. For a company that used fake holiday bonuses as a ruse to test their employees, it's terrible.
