Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, promised a donation of $100 million to the private foundation of former President Barack Obama.
The largest gift yet for the Obama Foundation came from Mr. Bezos, one of the world's richest men. Last week, Mr. Bezos announced $96.2 million in grants to groups working to end family homelessness.
Mr. Bezos, who stepped down as Amazon's chief executive in July, has become a philanthropist and traveled to space on a Blue Origin ship.
The plaza at the Obama Presidential Center should be named after John Lewis, the civil rights leader who died last year. The foundation broke ground on the center earlier this year, which will include Mr. Obama's presidential library, a museum, an athletic center and more.
Mr. Bezos said that John Lewis was a great American leader and a man of extraordinary decency and courage, and that he could not think of a better person to honor with this gift. I support President and Mrs. Obama in their mission to train and inspire tomorrow's leaders.
The news of the gift was reported by the online news group.
It was not Mr. Bezos biggest gift in recent months or his first brush with Mr. Obama. Mr. Bezos and Mr. Kerry pledged $1 billion to the Bezos Earth Fund.
