A black hole has been found in a cluster of stars. The black hole is 11 times larger than the sun and is part of a system. The paper was published on arXiv.org.

Black holes can't be directly observed, so proving their existence is difficult. The strongest evidence for black holes comes from systems in which a visible star can be shown to be in close proximity to a massive but unseen companion. Astronomers use these systems to look for a black hole by studying the motion of a visible object around it.

Due to observational limitations, only a few direct dynamical detections of non-Interacting black holes have been made. There has been no direct detection of a black hole in a young massive cluster. Finding such objects could help us understand the initial mass function and the early evolution of black holes.

The first detection of a black hole with a companion in a GC was made by a group of astronomer led by Sara Saracino of John Moores University. The object is a young (100 million years old) and massive (with a mass of around 100,000 solar mass) GC in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The discovery is part of a systematic search for stellar-mass black holes in young massive stellar clusters in the LMC by exploiting multi-epoch MUSE observations taken at the Very Large Telescope.

A black hole with a mass of around 11 solar mass and a main-sequence star with a mass of around 5 solar mass were found in a newly discovered binaries. The system has a short period of five days and a level of 38 degrees of inclination.

The researchers think that the system will experience a overflow when the companion star leaves the main-sequence. A stable mass transfer and significant X-ray emission are predicted by them.

Mass transfer will likely end when most of the hydrogen envelope of the donor star has been transferred to the companion or lost from the system. If it is, it will experience another phase of mass transfer and X-ray emission when the star burns helium in a shell and becomes a black hole.

The authors of the paper said that their discovery may be the beginning of the construction of the black hole initial mass function. Their study supports the search for a complete population of black holes.
