Sony has a patent for its PS5 products. The design patent was published in the US Patent and Trademark Office on November 16th, just a week before the PS5 was released. There is speculation that Sony will make its own PS5 skins.

A design patent was spotted by OP Attack, which comes more than a year after Matt MacLaurin, Sony's former VP of UX design at PS, said that a black version of the PS5 would be a special edition for everyone. The PS5 console is white, even though Sony has created black versions of its controllers and headsets.

Sony has threatened legal action against third parties who tried to fill the void. A small company called PlateStation5 was forced to cancel and refunds orders for black PS5 faceplates after legal action from Sony. The company that sells custom plates returned earlier this year.

DBrand dared Sony to file a lawsuit, and even sold its own black faceplates. Sony threatened DBrand with legal action, forcing the company to pull its faceplates and replace them with a new design and a marketing campaign that mocked Sony's team of lawyers.
