Matchup between No. 1 South Carolina and No. 2 UConn delays AP women's basketball poll a day

The AP women's Top 25 basketball poll will be delayed one day so voters can assess the game between South Carolina and Connecticut.

The AP Top 25 will be released on Mondays, and the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament will be at the same time. The AP decided to hold the poll one day so it will reflect the outcome, which is the second time since the poll began in 1976 that it has been delayed.

Barry Bedlan, AP's Global Director of Text and New Markets Products, said that it made sense to release the poll this week due to the 1 versus 2 game.

The other time was also involving the University of Connecticut. The first meeting between the two teams was on January 16, 1995 in Tennessee. The poll was also held until the next day as the Huskies moved to the top spot for the first time in school history.

Geno Auriemma knows why the poll is happening again, as he remembers how big a deal it was when it was held a few years ago.

He said it's fun for everyone.

This will be the 61st meeting between the top two teams in the poll and the sixth time in November. The No. 1 team has a 37-23 advantage. The last time these teams met was in February. In that game, the second team, the University of Connecticut, won 63-59 in overtime.

In the last nine games, the University of Connecticut has gone 22-3 and won nine.
