The UK will require EV charging stations for all new homes and businesses in 2022, the government announced today. The new measure will add up to 145,000 extra charging points each year to boost EV adoption.
The press release states that this will mean that people can buy new properties already ready for an electric vehicle future, while ensuring charge points are readily available at new shops and workplaces across the UK.
The new rules would increase the number of charging points by over 50 percent in the first year. Large scale renovations that will have over 10 parking spaces are included in the law. The details of the rules, like power outputs, have not been released.
The Labour party noted that London and the southeast part of the country have more charging points than the rest of England and Wales combined. It doesn't include any provisions that would make EV more affordable for lower- and middle-income families, the BBC reported.
10 years earlier than planned, the UK government wants to ban the sale of fossil fuel cars. The government has said that it will spend about $600 million on EV charging infrastructure.
