Mauricio Pochettino open to leaving Paris St-Germain if Man Utd make approach

Paris St-Germain are in control of their own destiny at the top of the table.

It's not out of the question that Mauricio Pochettino could become the next Manchester United manager.

It was thought it would be difficult to get the Argentine away from Paris Saint-Germain mid-season.

On Sunday, United sacked Solskjaer and said they were looking to appoint an interim manager.

That could change if Pochettino is available.

It is not thought that United have made an approach yet, but the 49-year-old is less than happy with the setup at Paris Saint-Germain, where his role is essentially that of first-team coach, with all broader club and footballing issues handled by Leonardo.

During his five years in charge of Spurs, he enjoyed more control and is eager to return to the top flight.

He is living in a hotel in Paris while his family are in London, and he has never made any secret of his desire to manage in the English game again. It is easy to get to the capital from Paris than it is from Manchester, so the travel element is not a huge factor.

After 14 games this season, Paris Saint-Germain are 11 points clear of second-place Manchester City in the French league and are in second place in their group in the European competition. This week, he will be in Manchester for his team's game.

The culture of the club is a part of his unhappiness in Paris. The team includes superstars like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, but they are not balanced. There is a surplus of left-backs, and there was a feeling that they did not need to sign Donnarumma.

Since he is an advisor to Leonardo, those recruitment decisions are out of his hands.

After taking charge of the French club in January, he had a difficult first season as he tried to overcome the long-standing criticism that he has not won a trophy.

He won the French Cup in May after lifting the Trophee des Champs within days of taking over.

In the end, Paris Saint-Germain failed to win the title for the second time in nine seasons, finishing a point behind Lille, and were knocked out of the playoffs by Manchester City.

The owners of Paris Saint-Germain are known to be admirers of the former Real Madrid manager, so a switch to Old United could work for both parties.

There are other possibilities for United.

It is believed that they would be unwilling to let Ten Hag go in the middle of the season. Brendan Rodgers has admirers as well.

If United do go for an interim appointment, there is a chance that former France defender Laurent Blanc could be a candidate. He has not had a job in Europe in the last two years.

Steve Bruce was a former United skipper and he might be interested in the short-term role.
