Elon Musk and Lauren Boebert engage on Twitter over Biden's plan to expand the IRS

The Biden administration's proposal to expand the IRS's number of employees under the "build back better" agenda was opposed by the congressman and the CEO of the electric car company.

The IRS would hire nearly 87,000 new workers over the next decade in order to close the tax gap by collecting taxes owed by large corporations, partnerships, and wealthy individuals.

The proposed increase in IRS workforce was compared to the employment of 70k and 15k by Boebert.

On November 22, 2021, Elon Musk posted a picture of himself.

The IRS has dedicated audit teams for high net worth individuals. The doubling of staff is for everyone else.

The tax gap, the difference between taxes owed to the government and what is actually paid, will rise to more than $7 trillion over the next decade, or 15% of taxes owed, according to a May report from the Department of Treasury.

The report said that these taxes come at a cost to American households and compliant taxpayers as policymakers choose rising deficits, lower spending on necessary priorities, or further tax increases to compensate for the lost revenue. The tax gap benefits high earner who accumulate more of their income from non-labor sources.

An investigation by ProPublica found that Musk did not pay federal income taxes in the year. He was the second-richest person in the world.
