The police chief in the city of Waukesha said that more than 20 people were injured when an SUV crashed into a Christmas parade.

Chief Dan Thompson said that a vehicle was recovered. Some of the injured were taken by police to hospitals, while others were taken by family members.

There is a town in Wisconsin called WaukESHA. Multiple people were injured when an SUV sped into a Christmas parade in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha.

The police in the city of Waukesha urged people to avoid the downtown area.

A red SUV broke through barriers and sped into the road where the parade was taking place in a live video feed from the city of Waukesha. It is not clear how many people were injured. Police said they would hold a news conference near the parade route. There is a time for this.

The mayor of Milwaukee said that he did not think there was a current danger to the public. Paul Farrow told The Associated Press that there were multiple injuries, but he didn't know how many or if anyone had been killed. Farrow left the parade before the incident occurred. He said he saw police cars responding while he was on his way home.

A video shows an SUV hitting a group of people along the parade route. The sound of a marching band is replaced by screams.

Angelito Tenorio, a West Allis alderman who is running for Wisconsin state treasurer, told the AP that he was watching the parade with his family when the SUV came speeding into the area.

Tenorio said they heard a loud bang. We heard loud cries and screams from the crowd at the parade. People ran away with tears in their eyes.

Tenorio said he saw people on the ground who appeared to have been hit by a vehicle.

He said it happened so fast. It was very frightening.
